From Istanbul to Timbuktu: Ink Routes

7 August 2009

From Istanbul to Timbuktu: Ink Routes was the project’s first independently run exhibition. It was also our first event looking beyond Timbuktu. Co-ordinated by Susana Molins Lliteras, the exhibition focused on Islamic calligraphic traditions, from Istanbul to Timbuktu. The exhibition consisted of 45 contemporary calligraphic works from Mali, Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco, Turkey and Spain.  The exhibition was launched in Cape Town in August 2009 at the Gold of Africa Museum and remained there until October. In conjunction with the exhibition, the project published a catalogue under the same name. In addition to the exhibition, there were six public calligraphy workshops facilitated by internationally renowned calligraphers. There was also a one-day academic seminar on calligraphy traditions.
