Ajami in Africa Seminar, Timbuktu

14 December 2009

On December 14 and 15, 2009, the Tombouctou Manuscripts Project held a seminar focusing on the Ajami writing tradition in Africa at the Ahmed Baba Institute (IHERI-AB). The first event to be held at the Institute since its official opening in early 2009, the seminar brought together researchers from Mali, Niger, Ethiopia, Nigeria, South Africa, Poland and Norway, all working on Ajami literatures in various parts of Africa. The aim of the seminar was to brainstorm ideas on how to approach further research on Ajami literatures in Africa and to gain an idea as to the status of Ajami traditions in various parts of the continent.
